India’s leading consumer electronics company, Videocon, has entered in to telecom sector by launching its GSM services in Tamil Nadu. Videocon already has a brand image among Indian consumers, and its GSM service will get benefit from this.
According to Mr. V.N. Dhoot, the chairperson of Videocon Group, the company is planning to extend its services in other locations soon. Videocon will start mobile services in over 100 cities in the next 100 days, and in other telecom circles by the end of this year.
Videocon will be investing Rs 14,000 crore over the next three years to build up its 2.75G EDGE GSM network. After its initial launch in Tamil Nadu, Videocon Telecom will rapidly expand over the next hundred days to cover hundred key cities across Punjab, Haryana, Gujarat, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Prasad, Maharashtra and Mumbai.
According to Mr Dhoot, Videocon Telecom will offer an unprecedented sub-one-paisa effective tariff. Videocon Telecom wants to suit all pockets with tariff plans that are transparent and simple.
The telecom market in India is largely dominated by older players like Bharti Airtel, Reliance communications and Idea among private players in mobile service business. In latest, Bharti Airtel is very close to sign a deal to acquire African operations of Kuwait’s Zain Telecom for $10.7 billion, in its bid to diversify from over-crowded Indian market.
Increased competition is usually better for the consumer. The Indian mobile services market is not an easy one to getting into. However, if anyone can do it, Videocon can do it as well.
